Cloud or local server: which one for your SMB?
Should you put your data and applications in the cloud, or on a server in your office ? Both work. The right choice depends on your business, not on fashion. Here is how to decide.
The cloud, in short
Your data and software run on remote servers, reachable over the internet. You pay a subscription. The provider manages the hardware and part of the security.
Strengths :
- Nothing to buy or host.
- Reachable anywhere, on any device.
- Capacity that scales with your needs.
Limits :
- You depend on your internet connection.
- The monthly cost rises with the number of users.
- Your data sits with a third party you must choose carefully.
The local server, in short
A physical server sits in your office. You own it. It stores your files and runs your applications on site.
Strengths :
- Your data stays with you.
- Fast on the local network, without depending on the internet.
- A controlled cost over time, after the purchase.
Limits :
- An upfront investment.
- Maintenance and backups are your responsibility.
- Remote access needs configuration.
How to choose
Ask yourself a few simple questions.
- Do your teams often work remotely ? The cloud makes access simpler.
- Do you handle large files on site, like video or drawings ? A local server is faster.
- Is your internet connection reliable ? If not, all-cloud is risky.
- Do you have legal constraints on where the data sits ? That can steer the choice.
Often it is a mix
Many SMBs combine both. The cloud for email, shared documents and remote work. A local server or NAS for large files and a fast backup. The best of both worlds, as long as everything is well connected.
What about security?
No option is safe by default. The cloud protects you from hardware theft, but needs well-managed access. The local server gives you control, but requires updates and tested backups. In both cases, the 3-2-1 rule for backups stays essential.
